Is IELTS Academic Harder Than General Training?
Short answer: neither version is “harder” for everyone. IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training measure different reading and writing tasks. Your perceived difficulty depends on whether you are stronger with charts and academic essays or letters and everyday texts.
What stays the same
Listening and Speaking share the same broad structure. Your band profile might still differ by skill—but the exam papers for those sections are not split into “easy” vs “hard” versions.
Where the tests diverge
- Academic Reading uses longer, more formal passages; questions often mirror university-style reading.
- General Training Reading mixes shorter real-world texts (notices, ads) with a longer passage—some candidates find the variety easier, others find the time pressure harder.
- Academic Writing Task 1 usually involves describing data or processes; General Training Task 1 is letter writing. If you fear graphs, Academic Task 1 can feel brutal; if you fear formal letters, General Training Task 1 can feel worse.
