IELTS Test Strategy
“Strategy” is not a substitute for English ability—but bad strategy can lower your score even when your level is strong. Think in time budgets and recovery plans.
Section-level mindset
- Listening: Miss one question? Move on. The next answer is worth as much as the last.
- Reading: Skim for structure, then attack question types you handle fastest first if timing is tight.
- Writing: Task 2 weighs heavily—protect Task 2 time even if Task 1 runs long.
- Speaking: Silence hurts fluency—use filler honestly (“Let me think…”) instead of freezing.

Frequently asked questions
Should I guess on Reading?
Usually yes—there is no penalty for wrong answers on many item types. Budget time so you attempt every question.
What is the biggest strategy mistake?
Spending too long on one hard question and missing easy points later.
