Universities do not share one magic number. Country, ranking, major, and degree level all shift the bar. Treat anything you read online—including this article—as orientation, not authority.
Typical ranges you might see (verify yourself)
Many taught postgraduate programs list overall 6.5–7.5 with writing 6.0–6.5+ as common *examples*. Undergraduate ranges can overlap but are not interchangeable with graduate rules.
Why “overall 7.0” can still fail
Programs often publish:
- Overall band
- Minimum per skill (especially Writing and Speaking)
You can hit 7.0 overall and still be rejected if Writing is 5.5 against a 6.0 minimum.
How to read requirements correctly
1. Find the official program page for your entry year. 2. Note Academic vs General Training acceptance. 3. Save a screenshot/PDF of the rule when you apply.
